MARINE BOMBING SQUADRON FOUR TWENTY-THREE

SQUADRON LOG BOOK

COMMENTS:
My grandfather was Dewillis "Bill" Schwartz. I had never searched for information about my grandpa's time in the Marines before tonight. I'm very impressed by what I have found. Thank you for creating this website to honor the brave Marines of VMB 423. Semper Fi!

My father, SSgt Frank J Dropla served with VMB423. I have several pictures he took of Green Island and some of Edenton, NC. The pictures of him on Green Island that I have are the only pics I have of him sporting a beard. He went on to serve with 7th Engineers and several other units until he retired in 1965. He didn't speak much of WWII but when he did he told us of playing
softball on Green Island. Later, when I went into the Marine Corps, I too was in aviation and felt like I was just continuing what he started in the family. Hats off to all of you guys.

My father was William M. "Buddy" Moredock. He served as a tailgunner on a PBJ. He went through training in Memphis, Jax, and Edenton, NC before shipping out to the Sout Pacific. Would like to hear from anyone who may remember him.

To Roger Benachowski -My uncle was Clyde E. Yates who was the Navigator-Bombardier on your uncle's plane. Clyde wife died recently, but he still has three sisters living (including my mother). As far as I know, the family knew nothing about how Clyde died (did they go out on a mission and got lost, got lost in combat, or ???). I have an 8x11 picture of Clyde in uniform and in a Marine frame. Would be interesting in anything your may know about what happened to Clyde. Thanks. Dick C.

My uncle Thaddeus Banachowski flew in the 423 and crashed during a radar check in very bad weather near Tutuba Island. We have declassified papers showing the mission he was on and what occurred. We just lost my dad his brother a year ago in July. I am trying to find out as much as I can about my uncle I never got a chance to meet. My dad always talked about his older brother Ted and what a great guy he was. If anyone knows more about him I would love to hear it.
Thx
Roger B
